According to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, European countries may not depend on Russian gas in 25 years.
During the negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, Angela Merkel suggested that Europe might reject Russian gas in 25 years.
Notably, European countries will completely or partially stop depending on Russian natural gas by 2046. Merkel believes that Ukraine should also learn how not to rely on LNG. Instead, the country should promote the development of hydrogen.
At the meeting in Kyiv that took place on August 17-20, the leaders discussed the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Zelensky considered the project to be a dangerous geopolitical weapon.
The German Chancellor recognized the importance of Zelensky’s remarks. Angela Merkel noted that Germany could impose sanctions against Russia if necessary. The Chancellor also added that Ukraine would remain a transit country for Russian gas after 2024.
