A few days ago, popular social network Facebook rebranded itself. However, users believe only its name has changed. Meta, a current social network name, is remarkably similar to Facebook.
Notably, the new corporate name was announced at the annual conference of the company's developers. According to the official version, it will better reflect the company's current activities. Besides the company’s logo, nothing has changed after CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the news some days ago. Apparently, real changes are ahead as Facebook executives have promised to create a unique metaverse, an online world in which people can work, play games and communicate using virtual reality headsets.
"From now on, we’re going to be metaverse first, not Facebook first. Facebook is one of the most used products in the world, but increasingly, it doesn’t encompass everything we do. Today we’re seen as a social media company. But in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people," Mark Zuckerberg said. However, some independent experts attribute the company’s rapid name change to a great amount of negative news related to Facebook. The rebranding occurred immediately after the publication of articles based on internal documents disclosed by former company employee Frances Haugen. According to her, Facebook in all cases considered its profits more significant than its users' well-being. Besides the social network of the same name, Facebook owns another network, Instagram, as well as well-known messenger WhatsApp. They all will continue to operate using their former names.
