France is now evaluating the economic consequences of social unrest that erupted in response to the police fatal shooting of a French teenager. At some point, protests turned into violent riots and looting that have already caused more than €1 billion worth of damage. Reportedly, more than 200 shops and supermarkets were ransacked, looted, and sometimes even burnt to the ground. The French government promised total support to businesses affected by vandalism. French Minister of Economy and Finance Bruno Le Maire told BFMTV that damaged stores will be allowed to suspend tax and social security payments. Besides, the government has announced that it will extend the country’s sales period to mitigate the impact of the recent riots. Earlier, Minister of Justice Eric Dupond-Moretti warned that parents of children under 17 who took part in protests could face prosecution.
