Electric Vehicle (EV) industry leader, Tesla Inc. (TSLA), has issued a recall on approximately 200,000 of its vehicles in the United States. The recall is in relation to a software issue that can interfere with the functionality of the rearview camera, according to information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The company has identified the issue in certain Tesla Model S, X, and Y vehicles from the year 2023. These particular models are outfitted with the fourth-generation full self-driving computer and operate on software versions ranging from 2023.44.30 through 2023.44.30.6, or 2023.44.100. This problem arises from software instability, preventing the rearview camera from displaying the image correctly.
As per the information from the regulatory body, an ineffective rearview image whilst reversing can potentially impair the driver's visibility, hence increasing the likelihood of an accident. However, as of now, no accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been reported in relation to this issue, reports the agency.
In response to this problem, Tesla has already rolled out a free Over-The-Air (OTA) software update. The company is also planning to send out notification letters to all affected vehicle owners by March 22, 2024. Owners seeking assistance can reach Tesla's customer service at 1-877-798-3752.
Earlier, Tesla recalled over 2 million vehicles across the United States in the recent past to tackle issues related to their Autopilot advanced driver-assistance system. This recall affected four different Tesla models produced between the years 2012 and 2023.
Furthermore, Tesla had to recall over 1.6 million vehicles in China this month. The recall was issued to rectify problems with the Autopilot features and door lock mechanisms of these vehicles. Just like the current situation, all those issues were also addressed via a complimentary OTA software update.
