In December, Sweden experienced a significant decrease in its foreign trade surplus compared to the previous year, according to Statistics Sweden's latest data released on Monday. The trade surplus had increased to SEK 6.2 billion, up from SEK 1.3 billion in December of the previous year. However, the surplus was slightly lower than the SEK 7.5 billion recorded in November.
On an annual scale, exports saw a slight decline of 1.0 percent, while imports fell more sharply by 4.0 percent. The non-EU trade balance remained strong, showing a surplus of SEK 27.1 billion for December. In contrast, Sweden's trade with EU countries resulted in a deficit of SEK 20.9 billion.
When adjusted for seasonal variations, December's trade surplus stood at SEK 4.1 billion, an increase from SEK 2.7 billion in November. Over the course of 2024, Sweden's overall trade surplus amounted to SEK 67.5 billion, a rise from the SEK 45.9 billion reported in 2023. Throughout 2024, both exports and imports experienced reductions of 2.0 and 3.0 percent, respectively.
