Bulgaria experienced a substantial increase in its trade deficit in March 2025, reaching BGN 1,909.1 million, compared to BGN 721.5 million in the same month of the previous year. This change was primarily due to a decline in exports alongside a rise in imports. Specifically, exports decreased by 5.5% year-on-year, totaling BGN 6,917.8 million, largely impacted by reduced sales to both non-EU countries, which fell by 9.2%, and EU nations, which saw a 3.2% decrease. Conversely, imports rose by 9.8%, amounting to BGN 8,827.7 million, spurred by increased purchases from non-EU countries (up by 14.3%) and the EU (up by 6.5%). Analyzing the period from January to March, the trade deficit expanded significantly to BGN 4,853.5 million, compared to BGN 2,657.1 million during the same period the year before, as exports dipped by 3.1% while imports rose by 6.8%.
