UK Car Production Slumps 15.8% in April

In April 2025, UK car production experienced a significant decrease of 15.8% compared to the same period the previous year, with output totaling 59,203 units. This decline marks the lowest April production figure since 1952, excluding the anomaly of 2020 when the pandemic brought manufacturing to a standstill. The reduction in output was influenced by several factors, including the impact of US tariffs and the timing of the Easter holiday, which, falling later than usual, resulted in fewer working days and contributed to the relatively higher March figures. Additional challenges included transitions in model production and a dip in demand from crucial export markets. Export volumes, which constitute the bulk of UK car production, decreased by 10.1%, while domestic production saw a decline of 3.3%. Notably, shipments to the UK's two largest foreign markets fell, with exports to the European Union down by 19.1% and to the United States by 2.7%. Despite these setbacks, the EU maintained its position as the primary export destination, receiving over half of all shipments, and the US accounted for 16.5%. In stark contrast, exports to China and Turkey demonstrated robust growth, increasing by 44.0% and 31.2%, respectively.
