German Retail Sales Return to Decline

In April 2025, Germany experienced a 1.1% month-over-month decline in retail sales, following a revised increase of 0.9% in March. This decrease fell short of market expectations, which had forecasted a 0.2% rise, marking the first decline in retail sales after four consecutive months of growth. The non-food sector saw a 1.3% drop in sales, while food sales decreased slightly by 0.1%. Additionally, online sales fell by 0.2%. However, when comparing year-over-year data, retail sales achieved a 2.3% increase in April, although this was lower than the 3.3% growth recorded in March. This annual increase was fueled by advancements in both the food (+2.3%) and non-food sectors (+2.6%), with online sales experiencing a significant surge of 14.1%.
