Austria Inflation Rate Edges Down in May

Austria's annual inflation rate slightly decreased to 3% in May 2025, down from 3.1% in April, according to preliminary estimates. "The primary contributor to inflation remains the services sector, with prices increasing by 4.4% compared to the previous year. While still robust, this rate is a slight decrease from recent months. Additionally, prices for food, tobacco, and alcohol experienced an above-average rise of 3.3%. On the other hand, energy prices experienced a modest increase of just 1.3%, falling below the overall inflation rate. This trend is largely attributed to notably lower fuel prices compared to the previous year, which effectively counterbalanced the impact of elevated electricity costs. Prices for industrial goods registered only a marginal rise of 0.8%. The core inflation rate, which encompasses services and industrial goods, stood at 3.1% for May," stated Thomas Burg, Director General of Statistics Austria. On a month-to-month comparison, consumer prices saw a decrease of 0.1% in May, marking the first decline in eight months, following a 0.2% increase in April.
