Slovakia Retail Sales Drop for 3rd Month

In April 2025, Slovakia experienced a 0.4% year-over-year decrease in retail sales, a slight improvement from the 2.5% decline seen in March. This represents the third consecutive month of retail contraction, though it is the smallest reduction in this period. The milder decline can be attributed mainly to a narrower drop in sales through stalls and markets, which fell by 7.1% as opposed to a 16.9% decrease in March, and a recovery in sales at non-specialized stores, which saw a 7.9% increase following a 4.5% decrease the previous month. Nevertheless, declines persisted in several areas: non-store retailing decreased by 4.0%, cultural and recreational goods by 23.7%, food, beverages, and tobacco by 10.9%, and ICT equipment by 6.4%. Conversely, sales of automotive fuel grew at a slower rate of 0.5%, down from a 3.2% increase in March. On a monthly basis, retail sales experienced a 1.5% uptick in April, bouncing back from a 1.0% decline in March.
