In May 2025, Hungary experienced a 2.1% increase in retail sales compared to the previous year, marking a slowdown from the revised 4.9% growth observed in April. The expansion in sales of food, drinks, and tobacco decelerated to 0.5%, down from 3.6% in April. Similarly, non-food product sales also saw slower growth at 4.0%, compared to 5.2% in the prior month, with a notable impact on second-hand goods. Meanwhile, automotive fuel sales declined by 1.1%, following a 2.4% rise in April. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail activity experienced a decrease of 1.3% in May, reversing the 2.0% gain seen in the preceding period. Over the first five months of the year, overall retail trade was up by 3.1% compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.
