In June 2025, South Africa's gross foreign exchange reserves climbed to a record $68.415 billion, up from $68.116 billion in the previous month. This increase was largely attributed to a rise in Special Drawing Rights (SDR) holdings, which grew to $6.524 billion from $6.439 billion, alongside an uptick in foreign currency reserves, which advanced to $48.652 billion from $48.4 billion. However, gold reserves experienced a slight decline, decreasing to $13.239 billion from $13.277 billion. Concurrently, the central bank's forward position, reflecting pending or swap transactions, rose to $0.532 billion in May compared to $0.528 billion in the preceding month.
