Household consumption in the Netherlands experienced a 1.1% increase year-on-year in May 2025, an improvement from the slightly revised 0.3% growth observed in April. This growth was predominantly fueled by greater expenditures on goods, which rose by 0.2% compared to a decline of 1.1% in the previous month, alongside an increase in services spending, up 1.8% from 1.4%. Service expenditures included insurance, public transport, and visits to restaurants, events, and salons, which are significant as services make up over half of the total household consumption in the Netherlands. Within the category of household goods, there was continued growth in spending on durable goods, notably transport, with a 0.7% rise following a 1.3% increase in April. Moreover, the decline in spending on food, beverages, and tobacco was less pronounced at 0.3%, compared to a 0.9% drop previously, and there was also a smaller decrease in spending on other goods, such as energy, motor fuels, and personal care items, which fell by 0.2% compared to a significant 5.4% decline in April.
