Australia Building Permits Confirmed to Fall 6% in August

In August 2025, the seasonally adjusted number of total dwelling approvals in Australia decreased by 6% compared to the previous month, reaching 14,744 units. This followed a 10% decline in July, aligning with preliminary forecasts. This marks the second consecutive month of decline, primarily due to reduced approvals for private sector dwellings, excluding houses, which fell by 8.1% after a steep 25.8% drop in July, and private sector houses, which registered a 2.6% decrease compared to a previous 1.3% increase. By region, approvals fell in Victoria (11.8%), New South Wales (11.4%), South Australia (10%), and Western Australia (7.3%), whereas approvals saw growth in Tasmania (14.4%) and Queensland (3.7%). Year-over-year, total dwelling approvals rose by 3%, slowing from a 5.4% increase recorded in July.
