Canada’s Imports Edge Lower in September

Canada’s goods imports edged down 0.3% to C$73.2 billion in September 2026, following a 2.2% decrease in August. Imports of motor vehicles and parts fell 9.1%, after a 9.3% decline in August, as imports of passenger cars and light trucks dropped 13.2%. Consumer goods imports also weakened, declining 2.9%, largely due to an 18.3% decrease in miscellaneous goods and supplies, including lower imports of battery energy storage systems from China.

These declines were largely offset by strong gains in electronic and electrical equipment and parts, which rose 10.3% to a record high. Imports of computers and peripherals surged 29.4%, driven by higher purchases of processing units from the United States. Imports of communication, audio, and video equipment increased 5%, mainly reflecting higher cell phone shipments from China and the United States.
