FX.co ★ Bomb explodes in Istanbul

District Mayor reported that five people were injured during the blast on an overpass near a metro station. The city authorities closed off the pedestrian zone at the explosion site and halted city traffic around the metro station.

The explosion occurred in the area called Bayrampasa, a residential and industrial area on the European side of Istanbul. At present, the government defines the accident as a terror attack.

The police found evidence of a small hand-made bomb attached under a car parked near the entrance of the metro station. The initial version ruled out a terror attack as the explosion was first believed to have been from a power transformer.

Subway services throughout Istanbul have been suspended on the entire network. The neighboring districts are left without electricity.

Turkey has been on high alert since more than 100 people were killed by two suicide bombers in the capital Ankara in October.
