Retail sales in Malaysia experienced a noteworthy 7% year-on-year increase in September 2025, up from a 5% rise in August, making it the most substantial growth observed since January. Key factors driving this upward trend included a significant surge in sales at non-specialised stores, which climbed by 9.9% compared to a 5.6% increase in the previous month. Additionally, there was a notable rise in trade activities not conducted within traditional stores, stalls, or markets, registering a 9.2% increase, up from 5.0%. Sales of automotive fuel in specialised stores also saw an uptick, growing by 7.0% compared to 5.3% in August. Furthermore, sectors such as food, beverages, and tobacco (6.2% vs 5.5%), information and communication equipment (4.2% vs 3.1%), and cultural and recreational goods (4.6% vs 3.1%) within specialised stores recorded notable increases. On a monthly basis, retail activity expanded by 2.4% in September, building on a 0.5% growth in August.
