In October 2025, the seasonally adjusted count of total dwellings approved in Australia declined by 6.4% compared to the previous month, settling at 15,832 units. This marked a reversal from the 11.1% increase observed in September. The figure aligns with preliminary forecasts, with approvals for private-sector dwellings, excluding houses, experiencing a significant downturn of 13.1% following a notable 25.0% rise in the prior month. Meanwhile, approvals for private-sector houses fell by 2.1%, after a 3.2% upturn in September. Across different states, there was a decline in approvals for Victoria (-24.7%), New South Wales (-20.6%), and Tasmania (-15.0%). In contrast, Western Australia (28.1%), South Australia (11.2%), and Queensland (2.4%) saw an increase in approvals. On an annual comparison, total dwelling approvals saw a decline of 1.8%, after experiencing a 14.9% rise in the month earlier.
