In December 2025, new car sales in the UK saw a 3.9% year-on-year increase, reaching 146,249 units. This rise marked a recovery from the 16% drop observed in November. The growth was primarily driven by private and business purchasers, who showed a 16.0% and 15.3% increase in registrations, respectively, balancing out the 2.4% decline in fleet registrations. However, traditional internal combustion vehicles continued to face challenges. Diesel registrations decreased by 12.5%, and petrol car sales saw a decline of 3.1%. On the other hand, new energy vehicles commanded more than half of the total market share, underscoring the ongoing momentum toward electrification. Registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) experienced a substantial rise of 32.9%, while battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales increased by 8.0%, and hybrid registrations grew by 3.0% compared to the previous year.
