In December 2025, retail sales in Romania experienced a 2% year-on-year decrease, improving from a previously revised 3.9% drop in November. This event marked the fifth consecutive month of declining retail activity, though at a more moderate rate. The decline in sales growth slowed for food, beverages, and tobacco (-3% compared to -4.9% in November), and for non-food products (-2.3% compared to -3.4%). However, sales for automotive fuel in specialized stores saw an increase, rising by 3.2% compared to the previous month's 2.3% increase. On a month-to-month basis, retail activity improved by 0.6% in December, following a revised 0.2% growth in the prior month.
