In January 2026, the UK's new car sales experienced a 3.4% increase compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 144,127 units. This growth marks a slight deceleration from the 3.9% rise recorded in the previous month. Notably, registrations for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles surged by 47.3%, reaching 18,557 and accounting for more than 12% of all new registrations. Meanwhile, hybrid electric vehicle registrations saw a modest increase of 4.8%, totaling 19,197 units. Registrations for battery electric vehicles stabilized with only a slight 0.1% rise, at 29,654 units, representing over 20% of the market share. Conversely, sales of petrol engine vehicles declined by 1.9%, falling to 68,757 units.
