Indonesia Shares Extend Slide on BI Transition Concerns

Indonesia’s IDX Composite fell 32 points, or 0.5%, to 6,155 in Tuesday morning trade, extending its losing streak to a fifth consecutive session. Sentiment mirrored weaker U.S. equity futures, after an overnight sell-off in chipmakers on Wall Street pushed semiconductor indices lower for a third straight day. Investor caution was further reinforced by the upcoming Federal Reserve policy decision later this week and earnings reports from major U.S. technology companies.

On the domestic front, uncertainty surrounding the leadership transition at Bank Indonesia weighed on risk appetite, following the abrupt resignation of Governor Perry Warjiyo. Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti has assumed the role of acting governor pending the appointment of a permanent successor.

Losses were broad-based, spanning financials, energy, industrials, and infrastructure. However, the downside was partially offset by a decline in global crude oil prices, which helped ease fiscal concerns for Indonesia as a net oil importer. Among the notable laggards were Medco Energi (-3.5%), Sarana Menara Nusantara (-2.0%), Mitra Adiperkasa (-1.4%), and Perusahaan Gas Negara (-1.0%).
