Fed Waller signals higher rates if inflation stays elevated

Christopher Waller, a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, made a straightforward statement regarding the risks of prolonged price increases. He warned of a high likelihood of interest rate hikes in the short term, ironically noting that “sternly staring at inflation until it melts before our withering gaze is not an option.” According to Waller, the Fed is at a crossroads, and if fresh macroeconomic data shows another acceleration in core inflation, the regulator will have no choice but to tighten monetary policy promptly.

Waller’s tough rhetoric sharply contrasts with the cautious communication style of new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, appointed by President Donald Trump. Unlike Warsh, who avoids making specific promises, Waller emphasized the need for complete transparency with markets, stating that the central bank should not spring unexpected surprises on investors. He pointed out that price pressures in the country are fueled by rising energy costs, new trade tariffs, and substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Waller asserted that the Fed must be prepared to act proactively to prevent a recurrence of the inflation crisis seen in 2021-2022.

Concerns about a new wave of price increases intensified following the Fed’s June meeting, which was Warsh’s first in charge. At that meeting, the regulator kept the benchmark rate in the range of 3.5%-3.75% but sharply revised its annual inflation forecast for 2026, increasing it from 2.7% to 3.6%. Investor anxiety is further underscored by May’s statistics, which indicated that US inflation exceeded 4% for the first time in three years.
