Who purchased new US debts amounting to $1 trillion?

According to experts, foreign holders of American bonds increased investments, although that increase was not too big. Investments of non-residents in United States Treasury bonds for the current year to March 2018 grew by $220 billion. Experts wonder who purchased all the remaining bonds of the American government. It should be reminded that during the reporting period the gross national debt of the United States spiked to $21.1 trillion. Furthermore, the debt publicly traded on the exchange increased by $1.06 trillion to $15.4 trillion. In the list of holders of US Treasury bonds, the Federal Reserve Bank statement includes 15.6% of securities, or $2.4 trillion, foreign holders possess 41% of bonds, or $6.3

trillion, and the rest of $6.7 trillion belongs to the United States citizens.

Currently, as part of the statement normalization, the Fed has reduced its investments in treasuries for 12 months by $51 billion. Experts pointed out that during this period, foreign owners increased investments by $220 billion. However, the question of the remaining $891 billion is still open.

Analysts admitted that the state bonds for such a huge amount were purchased by Americans with the help of pension funds, bond funds, and others, as well as informal investors from different countries. At the moment, the yields on treasuries are at maximum for several years, the bonds look very attractive to investors.

As for investments from other states, the first place is taken by China. Last March, the investments from the PRC achieved whopping $1.19 trillion.

Previously, in terms of investments in US debt securities, Japan dominated, however, over the past two years, this indicator has significantly decreased. Since July 2016, the investments of the Japanese authorities have reduced by $111 billion to $1.04 trillion, which is considered to be the minimum since 2011.
