Foreign investors purchased C$46.9 billion in Canadian securities in April 2026, far surpassing expectations of C$8.2 billion and representing the largest monthly inflow since October 2025. The surge was driven primarily by bond purchases totaling C$48.6 billion, complemented by a smaller net inflow into equities of C$5.6 billion.
Non-resident investors bought a record C$38.5 billion in government bonds, including an unprecedented C$27.7 billion in federal government securities. While US investors accounted for the bulk of this demand, investors from Asia and Europe also expanded their holdings. Foreign investors additionally acquired C$10.6 billion in provincial government bonds, the largest amount since January 2025, and purchased C$10.2 billion in corporate bonds, mainly from financial issuers. In contrast, they reduced their positions in money market instruments by C$7.4 billion.
