New Zealand equities fell 133 points, or 1.0%, to close at 13,880 on Thursday, surrendering gains from the morning session and the previous two days as investors locked in profits after the benchmark hit a record high on Wednesday. The broader index retreated from the 14,000 mark, reached for the first time in the prior session on strength in the materials sector.
Losses were partly offset by a rebound in US stock futures, supported by a sharp rise in Nvidia shares following its earnings release. Still, nearly all sectors finished in negative territory, led by consumer staples.
Precinct Properties NZ slumped 4.3% after publishing its results. Other notable decliners included A2 Milk (-3.4%), Meridian Energy (-2.7%), EBOS Group (-1.3%), Infratil (-1.3%), ANZ Group (-1.2%), and Fisher & Paykel (-1.0%).
In contrast, Genesis Energy advanced 1.8% after reporting higher earnings, even as overall profit was cut in half due to a valuation impact. Summerset Group jumped 8.0% after posting a 92% increase in net profit for the six months ended June 30, 2026.
