Yen Firms on Intervention Worries

The Japanese yen stabilized around 159.8 per dollar on Tuesday, attempting to rebound from the closely watched 160-per-dollar level, a threshold that has intensified speculation about potential additional intervention by authorities. The currency has now surrendered more than half of the gains it made after the late-July joint Japan–US intervention in the foreign exchange market, with persistent structural weaknesses continuing to weigh on the yen.

Pressure on the yen remains driven by wide interest rate differentials, mounting fiscal concerns in Japan, and elevated oil prices associated with the conflict in the Middle East. Investors are also reassessing the outlook for Bank of Japan (BOJ) policy following reports that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has urged Prime Minister Satsuki Katayama and BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda to raise interest rates. Expectations are increasingly coalescing around a potential rate hike by the BOJ in September, amid ongoing worries about the yen’s prolonged weakness and inflation fueled by higher import costs.
