Eurozone GDP Growth Beats Expectations

The Eurozone economy grew by 0.4% in Q3 2026, down from 0.6% in Q2 but comfortably above market expectations of 0.2%, according to preliminary estimates. Ireland led the bloc with a robust 5.5% expansion, powered by strong AI-related investment. Spain and the Netherlands each posted 0.6% growth, supported by solid consumer spending.

Germany managed only 0.2% growth, as weaker exports and falling investment offset resilient household consumption. France unexpectedly contracted by 0.1%, weighed down by declining exports and investment, while Italy registered no growth, held back by a drop in industrial output.

Overall, the Eurozone has remained resilient this year, underpinned by substantial spending on AI, defense, and infrastructure. This has prompted forecasters to upgrade their 2026 growth projections to above 1% and to anticipate a further acceleration in 2027.

Even so, the ECB and other analysts caution that the current momentum may not be sustainable. Rising borrowing costs, renewed energy price pressures, and the risk of additional interest rate hikes could increasingly weigh on economic activity in the coming quarters.
