An opinion poll conducted by ARD revealed that Angela Merkel is still the country’s most popular politician and number one candidate for chancellor at the upcoming federal election. Her main rival is Peer Steinbrueck of German opposition Social Democratic Party. He only got some 32% of votes against 68% votes given to Ms Merkel.
If nothing changes until September, the present head of the Cabinet is very likely to be reelected for the third term. As to the recent pictures showing Angela Merkel in a swimming pool in Italy, where she went with her husband for Easter holidays, they just contributed to her popularity.
At the same time, despite firm confidence in the present government, Germans hardly hope for any economic miracles to happen. Be it as it may, three fourths of the nationals are sure the government is effectively dealing with the crisis, which they think will exacerbate further.
