South Africa Forex Reserves Slip from Record High

In September 2025, South Africa experienced a decline in its gross foreign exchange reserves, which totaled $69.74 billion. This is down from a record high of $70.42 billion observed in August. The main factor contributing to this decrease was a reduction in foreign currency reserves, which dropped to $47.795 billion from $50.160 billion the month prior. Conversely, gold reserves saw an increase, rising to $15.383 billion from $13.757 billion, and Special Drawing Rights (SDR) holdings also edged up, moving from $6.499 billion to $6.561 billion. Furthermore, the forward position, indicating the central bank's outstanding or swap transactions, significantly increased to $1.178 billion in September, compared to $0.535 billion in the previous month.
