Japan hopes to gain exemption from US trade tariffs

Kyodo news agency reported that Japan asked the United States to remove its exports from the lofty 25% tariff.

According to Japan’s Minister of Trade Yoshihisa Muto, the authorities have requested the White House to exempt its steel and aluminum products from the 25% tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump.

This information was confirmed by Yoshihide Suga, the Secretary General of Japan's Cabinet. He stated that Japan’s government had submitted the appropriate request to Washington.

Importantly, many of America's trade partners, including Japan—one of the key US allies in Asia—received tariff-free quotas during the administration of Democrat Joe Biden. However, President Trump canceled the previous agreements.

Currently, Taiwan, another Asian ally of the US, is on edge. Taiwan hopes to win Washington over by purchasing large quantities of American LNG. Taiwan’s authorities believe this tactic will help them avoid higher tariffs.
