Washington to impose extra 50% tariffs on imports from Canada starting August 19

US President Donald Trump has decided to impose additional import tariffs of 50% on a wide range of Canadian goods starting on August 19. The White House press office says these tough measures are being taken in response to Ottawa’s discriminatory trade policy, which allegedly places American products at a disadvantage compared with goods from other countries. The new tariffs will apply to motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, and dairy products.

The latest escalation between the neighbors followed sharp US accusations against Canadian authorities over environmental issues. Earlier, President Trump criticized Ottawa for inadequate wildfire control, saying smoke from the fires drifts into US territory. The president called this deliberate negligence that imposes multibillion‑dollar costs and vowed to roll those costs into import tariffs.

Washington’s tough stance on trade with Canada fits into the Trump administration’s broader protectionist agenda. In mid‑July, Trump imposed 25% tariffs on most imports from Brazil. According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the tariffs on Brazil were a retaliatory response to what he described as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s unfair stance during trade negotiations.
