Apple turns to China's CXMT for memory chips as AI boom strains supply

Apple is testing memory chips from Chinese manufacturer CXMT as it seeks to navigate a global component shortage fueled by the artificial intelligence boom.

The tech giant is exploring integrating the Chinese chips into several product lines, including iPhones and MacBooks destined exclusively for the Chinese market. According to the report, Apple has held preliminary talks with the potential supplier, though any formal contract would require official approval from the White House.

The push to diversify supply chains via China comes as hardware costs surge. Frenzied demand for AI development equipment has triggered a severe memory shortage, already forcing Apple to raise retail prices on its products globally.

Bringing CXMT on board as a backup supplier would give Cupertino added leverage in negotiations with existing partners and help ease cost pressures on key devices.
