Turkey strives to achieve energy independence

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pledged that Turkey would soon eliminate its dependence on foreign energy imports.

According to Erdogan, Turkey has tripled installed capacities in the energy sector, expanded its renewable energy installed capacities to 65%, and provided access to natural gas in 81 provinces. He stated that Turkey would strive to completely eliminate its dependence on foreign energy.

The Turkish government is focusing on several projects that would help it achieve that goal, such as developing natural gas fields in the Black Sea and launching Turkey’s first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu. The Akkuyu NPP is constructed by Russian energy company Rosatom.

Furthermore, according to earlier statements by Turkish officials, Turkey was seeking a 25% discount on gas imports from Russia. Ankara wanted the discount to apply to payments in both 2022 and 2023. Turkey planned to seek deferrals for payments until 2024 if it couldn’t achieve a deal with Russia, officials said.
