Alexandre Amorim, President of Brazil’s data processing service Serpro, the government greenlighted the national identity program. Digital ID cards would operate on private blockchain b-Cadastros. Serpro is engaged in project development.
Virtual versions of ID cards will be first issued in three cities: Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná. By the end of the fall, the digital identity program will be available across the whole country. Eventually, all citizens will be provided with digital ID cards by November 6, 2023, Serpro believes.
“Utilizing the b-Cadastros blockchain platform significantly enhances the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project,“ Alexandre Amorim points out. “Blockchain technology plays a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud, offering a more secure digital experience for Brazilian citizens,” Serpro’s President is certain.
In September, Brazil’s authorities embarked on the project of the issuance of identification documents on-chain. The reason is to target organized crime and ensure a simpler way for citizens to access civil services. On the minus side, experts warn that the monetary authorities could take advantage of digital IDs for surveillance and total supervision.
