In January, Japan noted a significant improvement in consumer sentiment, reaching its peak in over two years, as revealed by the Cabinet Office's data on Wednesday. The seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index elevated from 37.2 in December to 38.0 in January. This proved to be the highest rate since December 2021, which stood at 38.8.
The survey confirmed an increase across all sub-indices for January. The indicator that measures the overall standard of living rose by 0.8 points to 36.5, and the employment indicator grew by 1.0 points, landing at 42.9. The data also suggested that households' propensity to invest in long-term consumer goods improved, moving from 31.4 to 32.8, while the index for income growth experienced a minor uptick of 0.1 points to 39.7.
The most recent survey, conducted on January 15, included feedback from 8,400 households.
