UK Consumer Confidence Improves in October

The GfK Consumer Confidence Index for the UK improved, reaching -17 in October 2025, up from -19 in September. This rise outperformed the anticipated drop to -20 as consumers prepared for the Black Friday sales, despite reservations about the impending Budget. The increase was primarily attributed to a four-point lift in the major purchase index, which assesses consumer confidence in buying high-value items, bringing it to -12. Additionally, expectations for the country's overall economic situation over the coming year increased by two points, now at -30, while the forecast for personal finances decreased slightly by one point to +3. Neil Bellamy, GfK’s Consumer Insights Director, observed that consumers have been postponing major purchases in anticipation of Black Friday on November 28. He also noted that both consumers and retailers are keenly observing whether the Chancellor’s Budget will enhance or impede spending during this pivotal sales period.
