Japan’s Coincident Indicator Shows Signs of Stabilization in December

Japan’s Coincident Indicator improved modestly in December 2025, suggesting a slight easing in the pace of economic weakness toward the end of the year. According to updated data released on 6 February 2026, the indicator stood at -0.4% month-over-month, compared with a -1.0% month-over-month reading in November 2025.

The Coincident Indicator tracks current economic conditions, and the month-over-month comparison measures how the indicator changed relative to the prior month. While both November and December remained in negative territory, the smaller decline in December indicates that the downturn in coincident economic activity may be losing some momentum. November’s figure reflected a comparison to October 2025, while December’s reading captured the change from November 2025, highlighting a gradual, though still fragile, stabilization in Japan’s near-term economic backdrop.
