France’s Current Account Deficit Widens to €0.60B in December

France’s current account deficit deepened at the end of 2025, with the balance slipping to -€0.60 billion in December 2025 from -€0.30 billion in November 2025. The latest figures, updated on 6 February 2026, highlight a further deterioration in France’s external position as the year closed.

The widening gap indicates that France’s outflows on goods, services, income and transfers continued to exceed inflows, doubling the deficit month-on-month. While the absolute level of the shortfall remains moderate, the direction of travel may prompt closer scrutiny from policymakers and investors watching for signs of mounting external imbalances.

Markets will now be looking to upcoming releases for confirmation on whether December’s move reflects a temporary fluctuation or the start of a more persistent trend in France’s current account dynamics as 2026 progresses.
