Slovakia’s Trade Balance Swings to Deficit in December After Strong November Surplus

Slovakia’s trade position deteriorated sharply at the end of 2025, with the trade balance slipping into deficit in December after posting a solid surplus in the previous month. According to data updated on 6 February 2026, the country’s trade balance fell from a surplus of 358.3 million in November 2025 to a deficit of -162.7 million in December 2025.

The abrupt turnaround suggests a significant shift in the relationship between exports and imports within a single month. While the November figures pointed to strong external performance or relatively subdued imports, the December result indicates that imports outpaced exports sufficiently to push the balance into negative territory.

The December deficit marks a notable reversal in momentum for Slovakia’s external sector heading into the close of 2025, and will likely draw attention from policymakers and market participants tracking the country’s trade dynamics and broader economic outlook.
