U.S. Manufacturing Growth Cools as S&P Global PMI Eases to 51.2 in February

The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded at a slower pace in February 2026, as the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI eased to 51.2, down from 52.4 in January 2026. While the index remains above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, the latest reading signals a moderation in growth momentum.

The data, updated on 20 February 2026, suggest that while factory activity is still on an upward trajectory, the pace of improvement has weakened compared with the start of the year. The softer PMI reading may indicate more cautious demand conditions or emerging headwinds for producers after a stronger January performance.

With February’s figure marking a second consecutive month of expansion, markets and policymakers are likely to watch upcoming releases closely for confirmation of whether this slowdown is temporary or the beginning of a more prolonged cooling in U.S. manufacturing conditions.
