Turkish Industrial Output Drops at Softer Pace

Industrial production in Turkey declined 1.8% year-on-year in January 2026, moderating from a 2.1% contraction in December. Manufacturing output fell 2.5%, easing slightly from a 2.7% decrease in the previous month. Within manufacturing, the overall pace of decline was tempered by a smaller drop in food production (-2.6% vs -6.8% in December), even as output of machinery and equipment n.e.c. weakened further (-9.2% vs -6.5%) and production of other transport equipment also contracted, albeit less sharply (-2.8% vs -9.3%).

Total industrial output was additionally supported by stronger activity in electricity, gas, steam, and air-conditioning supply, which expanded 5.6%, up from 2.4% growth in December. By contrast, production in mining and quarrying fell 2.8%, reversing a 2% increase in the previous month. The downturn in this sector was led by crude petroleum and natural gas extraction (-2.1% vs +6%) and by other mining and quarrying activities (-0.8% vs +18.3%).

On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, overall industrial production slumped 2.8% in January, offsetting the 1.2% increase recorded in December 2025.
