South Africa’s Net FX Reserves Edge Higher to $73.76B in April

South Africa’s net foreign exchange reserves rose modestly in April 2026, signaling slightly improved external buffers for the economy. According to the latest data updated on 8 May 2026, net FX reserves increased to $73.757 billion, up from $73.187 billion in March 2026.

The roughly $0.57 billion month-on-month increase suggests a gradual strengthening of South Africa’s foreign currency position. While the data release does not break down the drivers of the move, the higher reserve level may offer the South African Reserve Bank marginally more room to manage external shocks and currency volatility going forward.

The continued build-up in reserves will be closely watched by investors assessing the country’s capacity to withstand global financial turbulence and fluctuations in capital flows during 2026.
