Tokyo Core CPI Inches Up to 1.4% YoY in August, Signaling Slight Pickup in Underlying Inflation

Tokyo’s core consumer prices, excluding both food and energy, rose 1.4% year-over-year in August 2026, up from 1.2% in July, according to data updated on 27 August 2026. The figure, often watched as an early indicator of nationwide price trends, suggests a modest firming in underlying inflation pressures in Japan’s capital.

The August reading compares the price level in August 2026 with that of August 2025, while the previous 1.2% figure measured July 2026 against July 2025. The step-up from July’s pace points to a gradual acceleration in services and other non-commodity components, even as volatile food and energy categories are stripped out.

This uptick in Tokyo’s core inflation gauge may be seen as a sign that domestic demand and price-setting behavior are slowly normalizing, though the overall rate remains subdued by international standards. Market participants and policymakers will be watching subsequent releases to gauge whether this is the start of a more sustained upward trend in Japan’s underlying inflation dynamics.
