Brazil’s Debt Burden Edges Higher in July as Gross Debt-to-GDP Hits 82.5%

Brazil’s gross debt-to-GDP ratio climbed to 82.5% in July 2026, up from 81.9% in June, according to data updated on 31 August 2026. The latest reading reinforces a month-over-month upward trend in the country’s public debt burden.

On a month-over-month basis, the July increase marks a 0.6 percentage point rise in the indicator, compared with June’s level. The data show that the “actual” comparison reflects July’s change versus June, while the “previous” comparison captures June’s change relative to May, highlighting a continued build-up in the gross debt ratio over consecutive months.

The July move will likely keep investors focused on Brazil’s fiscal trajectory, as even incremental month-to-month increases in the debt-to-GDP ratio can influence perceptions of sovereign risk, funding costs, and the scope for future fiscal policy.
