James Simon Gallery

The James Simon Gallery, which was opened in 2019 in Berlin, is considered to be one of the most notable projects by David Chipperfield. Its construction began in 2006 and cost more than €130 million. Named after the famous German patron of the arts Henri James Simon, the building features a white stone facade. The building serves not only as an exhibition hall but also as a portal through which visitors can reach the Museum Island on the River Spree.

Turner Contemporary

This museum was opened in the British resort town of Margate in 2011. Exhibiting the artworks of famous English landscape painter William Turner, the museum is composed of several white structures with panoramic glass windows. The shape of the museum is designed to resemble sails or typical seafront structures such as boathouses.

The Hepworth Wakefield

The Hepworth Wakefield museum is located in the UK town of Wakefield, the birthplace of famous British sculptor Barbara Hepworth. The building is situated on the riverbank right next to the water, similar to the Turner Contemporary. The museum’s structure is composed of ten concrete trapezoidal blocks and has no straight angles anywhere in its design.

Museo Jumex

Museo Jumex was opened in Mexico City in 2013 and houses the world’s largest collection of Latin American art. When working on its design, David Chipperfield strived to resolve lighting issues, as the building is surrounded by several skyscrapers. The project features an outstanding crown-shaped roof with skylights.

Hoxton Press Towers

The Hoxton Press Towers is a residential complex located near the City of London. Designed by Chipperfield in cooperation with Karakusevic Carson Architects, it was constructed in 2018. The complex consists of two towers made of handcrafted bricks, one of them red and the other is grey. The unique hexagonal shape of the towers helps break the visual uniformity of such buildings.
