CL/Crude Oil

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell for the second consecutive session, hovering near $100.10 a barrel during Asian trading on Tuesday. The sell-off in energy prices stemmed from diplomatic efforts in Middle Eastern capitals that initially raised hopes of averting a larger military conflict between the United States and Iran that could disrupt vital supply chains. Following high-level security talks in Tehran, official reports from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) confirmed that senior officials from Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey agreed to establish a framework for ongoing dialogue under the Mecca Agreement for Joint Defense, which aims to enhance regional stability, maritime security, and peace. The diplomatic efforts brought short-term relief to global markets, easing concerns about imminent severe disruptions to energy supplies ahead of next week's U.S. midterm elections. U.S. President Donald Trump has said that direct military action against Iran remains a viable option if the nuclear issues and security talks remain unresolved after the elections. Despite a temporary diplomatic lull, underlying supply risks in the Middle East energy corridor remain high, hindering a broader decline in crude oil prices. While the physical flow of crude oil at regional shipping hubs has essentially returned to pre-war levels, the security situation remains fragile. The conflict in Yemen between the Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels continues, while there are reports that Hezbollah in Lebanon is actively rebuilding its fighting capabilities after receiving recent financial support from Tehran. These ongoing flashpoints have left a substantial geopolitical risk premium embedded in WTI and Brent crude oil futures prices, and any renewed military conflict could quickly disrupt the global supply and demand balance. Furthermore, persistently high energy prices have complicated policy paths for global central banks, intensifying market expectations for maintaining tight interest rates to mitigate the impact of inflationary transmission. From a systemic positioning perspective, institutional analysis by TD Securities indicates that the next-order calculations remain positively correlated with WTI crude oil prices. Data from TD Securities’ CTA Position Tracker shows that net long positions for algorithmic strategies remain heavily concentrated around recent price levels, with key bullish catalysts also near the current trading range. This suggests that systematic commodity trading advisors (CTAs) are prepared to increase long leverage if crude oil prices resume their overall upward trend. TD Securities’ scenario models also indicate that systematic funds maintain a dynamic, rules-based risk framework designed to flexibly adjust positions based on changes in trend signals and volatility indicators over the coming months. Looking at the technical chart, despite short-term profit-taking, WTI crude prices remain above key moving averages, maintaining a constructive position. Immediate dynamic support is formed by the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level near $99.42, followed by the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement level near $96.97 and the 50.0% retracement level near $94.98, which converge around the 100-period simple moving average near $94.74, forming a strong barrier to demand. Technical momentum indicators, including the Relative Strength Index (RSI), have retreated back into neutral territory from previous overbought conditions, suggesting that this is now a healthy consolidation phase within the broader uptrend rather than an outright reversal. On the upside, immediate dynamic resistance lies in the psychological zone of $100.00 to $101.00, above which bulls will target a retest of the recent session high near $103.39. A break above the $103.39 resistance level will be crucial for buyers as it will check whether the price is able to extend its upward momentum and eventually reach new multi-month highs.
