Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday that he had a "warm and positive conversation" with U.S. President Trump following his re-election victory against the conservative Liberal-National coalition. Now embarking on a second term, Albanese discussed issues such as tariffs and the AUKUS defense pact with President Trump and expressed gratitude for his congratulatory message. Albanese noted, “We will engage with each other in person at some point in the future.” The Australian election was heavily influenced by concerns about the cost of living and uncertainties surrounding Trump's policies; nearly half of voters cited risks associated with Trump among their top five concerns. Although Trump had previously admitted he was not well-versed in the Australian election, he praised Albanese, describing him as “very good” and “respectful.” President Trump's recent imposition of a 10% tariff on Australia was previously criticized by Albanese as “not the act of a friend.” The Labor Party is currently leading in 85 out of 150 seats, with vote counting still underway.
