XAU/USD, GOLD

Technical and Fundamental Analysis of Gold (XAU/USD) Gold prices climbed toward $4,215 on Monday as renewed investment demand, a weaker US dollar, and continued safe-haven interest supported XAU/USD. The precious metal has attracted substantial investor attention despite recent volatility, with gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) recording strong inflows and central banks continuing to diversify their reserves. However, upcoming US inflation reports and shifting expectations for Federal Reserve interest-rate policy could determine whether gold extends its recovery or faces renewed selling pressure. Investment demand has emerged as an important source of support for the gold market. According to the World Gold Council, global physically backed gold ETFs attracted approximately $10 billion in September, bringing third-quarter inflows to a record $31 billion. Global ETF holdings increased by 67 tonnes during September, reaching a record 4,256 tonnes despite a monthly decline in gold prices. These figures suggest that investors continue to view gold as a valuable portfolio diversifier amid uncertainty surrounding inflation, government debt and global economic conditions. Central-bank purchases have also reinforced the longer-term outlook. China’s central bank has continued adding gold to its reserves, reflecting efforts to diversify official holdings and reduce reliance on traditional reserve assets. Geopolitical developments remain another important influence on gold prices. Uncertainty surrounding the Middle East has kept safe-haven demand in focus, while concerns about regional security and energy supplies have contributed to fluctuations in oil prices. Recent reports of a potential easing in geopolitical tensions have helped push oil lower, reducing some immediate inflation concerns and supporting gold by easing pressure on financial markets. Nevertheless, the situation remains fluid, and any renewed escalation could increase demand for defensive assets. Gold’s appeal is also supported by broader concerns about fiscal stability, currency diversification and the long-term purchasing power of traditional currencies. These factors may continue attracting investment even when short-term economic indicators create headwinds for the precious metal. Monetary policy remains central to the near-term gold outlook. Traders are preparing for a series of important US economic releases, including the Consumer Price Index (CPI), Producer Price Index (PPI), and retail sales figures. These reports could influence expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next policy decision by providing fresh evidence about inflation and consumer demand. If inflation remains elevated, policymakers may have greater reason to maintain restrictive interest rates or consider additional tightening. Higher interest rates and rising Treasury yields typically increase the opportunity cost of holding gold, which does not generate interest income, while a stronger US dollar can make dollar-priced bullion more expensive for overseas buyers. Conversely, softer inflation data and declining yields could improve gold’s appeal by reducing pressure from interest-bearing assets. According to the supplied CME FedWatch figures, markets assign a 17.7% probability to a Federal Reserve rate increase in October, while the probability of a December increase stands at 84.1%. These expectations leave gold sensitive to changes in economic data and policymakers’ comments. A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could revive demand for the US dollar and weigh on XAU/USD, whereas signs of easing price pressures may reinforce buying interest in the precious metal. XAU/USD is trading near $4,205 after recovering from lower levels, but the short-term structure remains cautious because prices are still below the key 20-period and 50-period simple moving averages (SMAs) on the H4 and H1 charts. On the four-hour timeframe, the primary demand zone lies between $4,140 and $4,175, where buyers previously absorbed selling pressure and triggered a rebound. Holding above this region would help stabilize the market and preserve the possibility of another recovery attempt. Immediate resistance is concentrated around $4,220–$4,240, where recent swing highs overlap with the declining 20-period SMA, positioned approximately between $4,220 and $4,280. A stronger supply zone sits around $4,260–$4,280, while the higher 50-period moving-average region near $4,330–$4,360 represents a more distant technical barrier. On the hourly chart, demand is concentrated between $4,160 and $4,180, supported by a fair-value gap and order-block confluence. Immediate resistance lies around $4,210–$4,230. A sustained move above the hourly 20-period SMA would improve the chances of a retest of the H4 resistance zones. However, rejection near current levels followed by a break below $4,180 could send gold back toward the broader $4,140–$4,175 demand area, with further support emerging around $4,100–$4,130. The gold price forecast remains dependent on whether buyers can overcome resistance near $4,220–$4,240 while defending the $4,140–$4,175 support zone. Strong ETF demand and central-bank purchases provide a supportive longer-term backdrop, but the dollar, Treasury yields, and US inflation data remain crucial short-term drivers.
