GBP/USD

Trading in the GBP/USD pair was relatively quiet on Monday, largely in line with expectations. The riots and political protests that swept across Europe had little impact on the pound's depreciation. However, the UK's domestic and geopolitical situation remains highly volatile, marked by a series of unusual political events. Over the past decade, the UK has had seven or eight prime ministers, none of whom completed a full parliamentary term. This frequent change stems from the failure of successive governments to steer the country towards sustainable economic prosperity following the 2016 Brexit referendum. In that referendum, the UK voted to leave the European Union by a narrow margin of 3%. The new prime minister, Andy Burnham, has adopted a striking political strategy, publicly raising the possibility of the UK eventually rejoining the EU. He has argued that Brexit has done more harm than good and that the UK needs a fundamental shift in its development path. While this remains largely political rhetoric, it highlights a growing consensus within the UK that the post-Brexit economic reality is far more challenging than anticipated. Internal decentralization pressures have exacerbated this tension: following Brexit, Scotland revived its independence bid, hoping to rejoin the EU; Wales and Northern Ireland have explored paths to EU membership; and all three constituent countries have recently enacted legislation allowing for future referendums. The UK therefore faces a significant structural risk of internal division, mirroring broader dilemmas on the European continent, such as the ongoing protests against the rising cost of living in France. These demonstrations suggest that popular discontent with economic pressures could soon lead to similar social unrest across the UK, even before any potential political realignment. Despite these broad geopolitical and structural challenges, the pound maintains a strong bullish outlook, largely due to favorable technical chart patterns. Daily and weekly charts show that the pair has begun a cyclical bounce from the lower edge of a multi-month consolidation channel, suggesting a potential test of the upper channel resistance. On October 20, the GBP/USD pair's five-day moving average volatility was 85 basis points, indicating significant trading activity, with a daily range of 1.3229 to 1.3399 expected on Tuesday. From a technical perspective, the Commodity Channel Index (CCI) has twice fallen into oversold territory and successfully formed a classic bullish divergence pattern, indicating the imminent end of the previous downtrend. While the market has not yet reacted strongly to these positive technical signals, the underlying structural momentum supports the pair's continued rise within its established range.
